When the great multitudes come after Jesus with swords and clubs prior to His crucifixion, Jesus rhetorically asks His disciples in Matthew 26:53, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and He will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
What is a legion? The only non-speculative numerical example I found was from a Wikipedia article on the Theban Legion numbering 6,666 men. They were a Roman legion that had converted to Christianity, and then in 286AD, were all martyred together because of their faith.
Well, if a legion had 6,666 angels, and Christ had 12 legions at His disposal, that means there were 79,992 angles pressed against the window of heaven looking down on earth, able and ready to pounce on the mob. One angel in Isaiah 37:36 obliterated 185,000 Assyrians in one night; can you imagine what Eighty thousand angels could do – that’s power!
Ephesians 3:20-21 says that God’s power is at work in the life of a believer. Have you tapped into that power through a relationship with Jesus Christ, and if so, are you living in light of that truth?
